Al Medina Colors is a youth house and public park designed as a new civic district—an urban “sector” where creativity becomes a public language and difference is celebrated as identity. Through a circular public arena, a stitched market spine, and a family of colorful cultural buildings, the project reshapes Baghdad’s everyday life into a place of exchange, learning, and belonging.
After years of conflict, Al Medina needed more than a building—it needed a gesture of healing. Al Medina Colors begins with a simple belief: cities recover when people can meet without fear, and when public space invites everyone to feel seen. Inspired by the youth’s own paintings—bold, layered, and unapologetically diverse—the project translates color into an urban message: difference is not something to manage, but something to value.
Set in a strategic central location, the design operates at the scale of a complete district—a new “Sector 81” that extends the city’s grid of 80 sectors and respects the defining axes of the area. A large circular civic arena becomes the heart: part amphitheater, part plaza, part everyday playground—shaded by a ring of lightweight canopies. Around it, buildings vary in height, proportion, and color, deliberately composing a skyline of coexistence—distinct pieces forming one readable whole.
The program is designed to keep the space alive from morning to night: workshops and laboratories for making, galleries and exhibitions for sharing, a library and lecture halls for learning, cinemas and sports for play, and cafés and restaurants for gathering. Markets are treated not as leftover commerce, but as a cultural connector—linking the external public market to an internal youth-focused marketplace through a continuous urban spine. In the end, Al Medina Colors is not just a center; it is a new civic ritual—where space meets a story of acceptance, and the city’s next chapter is written by its youth.
