WWF Frames of Nature — Orbetello Observation Cabins

Architecture as a camera: quiet frames that let nature come into focus.

Set within the WWF Oasis at Laguna di Orbetello, this project designs a family of elevated observation cabins that “frame” the lagoon’s landscapes—turning birdwatching into a spatial, immersive ritual.
Using foldable glass, lightweight timber construction, and minimal ground impact, the cabins offer access without intrusion—supporting research, education, and conservation through experience.

Laguna di Orbetello is not just scenery—it is a living system, one of the Tyrrhenian’s most important lagoons and a refuge for thousands of birds. The project begins with a belief WWF has carried for decades: there is no protection without knowledge, and no conservation without access. But access must be designed carefully—so that humans can enter nature’s world without rewriting it. Here, architecture becomes an instrument of attention: a way to slow down, look longer, and learn to listen.

Inspired by photography, each cabin acts as a spatial frame—cropping the vast “big picture” of the lagoon into moments of focus: a horizon line, a flock in flight, the ripple of water, the pink punctuation of flamingos. The cabins vary in dimension and proportion, so every unit offers a distinct narrative and a different relationship to distance, light, and movement. Inside, the experience is intentionally minimal: calm surfaces, warm timber, and generous openings that turn nature into the main interior

The design strategy is both experiential and ecological. Foldable glass façades can open fully—inviting natural ventilation and dissolving the boundary between observer and landscape, while still providing shelter from wind and weather when needed. All cabins are raised on slender columns to allow wildlife to pass beneath and to reduce footprint and soil impact. Constructed using vernacular logic and local pine wood, the architecture belongs to the place without dominating it. In the end, WWF Frames of Nature is a quiet alliance between people and ecosystem—tamed nature that moves us, so that admiration becomes awareness, and awareness becomes care.
