Approdo Park & Bar transforms “Apprado Catipolis” in Fagnano Olona (Greater Milan/Lombardy) into a low-impact, community-facing park anchored by a restored building and a new restaurant pavilion. The design stitches water-edge landscapes, playful public programs, and an inviting interior into a single, legible journey—arrive, pause, gather, and belong.
Approdo begins with a simple ambition: take an underused private property and give it public meaning—without erasing what’s already there. The masterplan is conceived as a law-cast, low-environmental-impact rehabilitation strategy: conserve land, reduce heavy interventions, and reframe the site as a civic asset. Instead of a “project dropped onto a park,” the approach is place-first—repair the ground, clarify movement, and define spaces that people can read instantly. From arrival, the site operates like an approachable everyday destination: a calm edge by the water, a shaded central heart, and clear loops that support strolling, meeting, and short stays—an essential YAAM principle: access that feels effortless, not forced.
Architecturally, the transformation is anchored by adaptive reuse plus one strong new gesture. The existing on-site building is recovered and modified—treated as the project’s memory and infrastructure—while a new, angular pavilion expands the program and identity of the park. The pavilion’s deep roof reads as a protective “urban umbrella,” creating a generous shaded threshold that works as a public living room: part canopy, part promenade, part event porch. Its folded geometry and warm timber lining amplify the feeling of welcome, while the openness around the edges keeps the park visually permeable and socially safe. In the aerial organization, the building hugs the landscape and water edge, pairing outdoor dining terraces with a playground and stepped seating—a deliberate YAAM move that prioritizes multi-age activation and keeps energy distributed across the site rather than concentrated in one corner.
Inside, the bar and restaurant are designed as the park’s social engine—a warm interior that still feels like it belongs outdoors. Timber slats, exposed structure, and a graphic chalkboard wall create a tactile atmosphere that is casual but characterful, supporting everything from weekday coffee to evening gatherings. Lighting is intimate and rhythmic, drawing people through the space and encouraging longer stays without becoming exclusive. The overall experience is choreographed as a sequence: arrive from the city, pass through a shaded civic threshold, choose your pace (play, sit, eat, wander), and always remain connected to the landscape. Approdo Park & Bar ultimately delivers the YAAM intent through built form: activate the everyday, make access intuitive, and convert a private parcel into a shared, lasting piece of the city’s social infrastructure.
